For the first time since 2013, the learners of Prestwich Street Primary School stood in front of a camera and smiled for individual and class school photos — a simple moment, yet one filled with meaning.
On this special day, 840 learners were photographed, creating memories that many of us grew up taking for granted. These photos are not only keepsakes for families, but also play an important administrative role, forming part of each child’s school file and supporting the Department of Education with updated records.
Prestwich Street Primary School serves a large and dedicated community. With 840 learners, annual school fees of R4,500 per child, and a feeding scheme that officially supports 72 children despite more than 200 learners needing food daily, the school faces ongoing challenges. Yet what stands out most is the unwavering commitment of the school’s staff — educators and ground workers alike — who are deeply invested in the wellbeing and future of every child.
Alive Foundation has proudly worked alongside Prestwich Street Primary School since 2012, supporting the school through various initiatives over the years. This photography project was another step in that long-standing relationship — one focused on dignity, inclusion, and opportunity.
To ensure that every child could take part, Alive Foundation covered the full cost of the photographer, removing a significant barrier for families. Parents and guardians are responsible for R30 per child to cover the printing of the photo sets, payable by the end of February.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to EJ Langner, who captured the day with care and professionalism, and to our volunteers Natalie Cooper and Rita le Roux, who generously gave their time to help the day run smoothly.
For many learners, this was more than just a photo — it was a moment of pride, excitement, and belonging. Seeing their smiles reminded us that sometimes the smallest projects can leave the biggest impact.
If you would like to contribute towards the costs of initiatives like this, your support helps Alive Foundation continue creating meaningful moments and lasting change within our communities.
